How Karate Saved My 9 Year Old Daughter!

As a parent, one of the things we do most is worry about our children. One of those worries is about safety. We criticize and doubt ourselves constantly wondering if we are teaching and giving our children all they need to know about being safe.

As a single parent, this worry is doubled — trying to be both mother and father. When my nine year old daughter won a free month of Karate through a reading incentive program at school, I thought “Hey, I’ll have her give this a try. Maybe it will help her learn how to defend herself in a way that I can’t teach her”.

Little did I know that what she learned in a few short months would be put to the test and a mother’s worst nightmare about her daughter would come true so soon in her young life. My daughter was accosted for immoral purposes by a young man (25 year old neighbor man) whom she trusted. She knew that what he was going to do to her was wrong and when he attacked her, I am proud to say that she knew what to do!

Yes, I had spoken with her about “bad touches” and tried to show her how to get away from strangers, but without the additional knowledge and principles of defending herself that she learned through Karate, she and other little girls would not be safe today. Not only did my daughter defend herself, but she also helped another girl escape from the grip of the same man. Because of my daughter and her use of Karate, for the next 10-21 years, little girls will be safe from this man while he is in prison.

There are no words to express how thankful I am to her instructors, Mr. & Mrs. McMullen at Karate America Appleton East — for teaching my child the knowledge to protect herself & others through Karate, its principles and its disciplines.
